He will next face Tomas Berdych, who reached the Rotterdam semi-finals for the second time (also 2012).
The third seed defeated Jerzy Janowicz 6-7(9), 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 28 minutes, to improve to 3-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. It was Berdych’s 10th match win of the season (10-2 overall), which includes an Australian Open semi-final exit (l. to Wawrinka).
Berdych could not convert five set point opportunities in the first set tie-break, which Janowicz clinched after Berdych hit a backhand into the net. Janowicz hit 25 winners in the 76-minute set, converting his third set point chance.
Andy Murray, the second seed and 2009 titlist, will face last week’s PBZ Zagreb Indoors winner Marin Cilic during the evening session, followed by local wild card Igor Sijsling versus Philipp Kohlschreiber. Sijsling is bidding to become the first Dutchman to reach the semi-finals since Raemon Sluiter in 2003.
