Benneteau and Juan Martin del Potro faced off today in the ABN AMRO Final. Benneteau fresh off victories over Roger Federer and Gilles Simon was full of confidence. However, he ran into a tough opponent today in Juan Martin Del Potro losing 7-6 (2) 6-3.
Benneteau started the match with a quick break of Del Potro's serve but gave it right back to Del Potro to even the match. The first set was a see saw battle which included Benneteau saving 2 set points on his serve to hold. Benneteau then broke Del Potro to force a first set tiebreaker.
Del Potro took a quick command of the tiebreaker getting up 5-2 and then finishing it on his serve 7-2.
Benneteau disappointed with the tie breaker started the second set by giving away his serve and then quickly the match. The rest of the set was more of the same. Del Potro was just too tough and the long week had taken their toll on Benneteau's legs.
The final against Del Potro was Benneteau’s eight ever in the ATP World Tour. However, on all seven previous occasions the Frenchman came up empty-handed.
Del Potro and Benneteau have never met before at the ATP World Tour. Benneteau: "Against a top ten player like Del Potro I’ve got nothing to lose. Rotterdam is a nice place for my first tournament win." Unfortunately that wasn't the case today but he has to leave this tournament very happy with his result.
